There are a few realities to health and wellness that simply can't be avoided no matter how hard you try. One of these realities is that you can't consider yourself to be a healthy person if your heart isn't in good shape. To this end, there are a number of things that you can do to get your heart in the shape you need it to be in to support your healthy lifestyle.
Exercise
Exercise is a grossly underrepresented way to keep your heart in shape. Most people look at exercise as something that can keep your overall body in shape, but rarely ever apply this logic to the human heart. However, the truth is that the heart gains quite a lot from a bout of vigorous exercise.
Exercise contributes to the deprivation of oxygen in your blood as your rate of respiration increases. As the oxygen in your blood decreases quicker than normal, your heart has to work even harder to pump oxygenated blood through your cardiovascular system. The more your heart does this, the stronger it can become.
Diet
Eating well is a tried and true method of keeping your heart in fighting shape. There are a lot of excellent foods out there that promote heart health and are easily accessible. The point here is that you should have a measured approach to your diet that takes in all of the potential benefits of the food you're going to eat. Wasting a good meal on shoddy food isn't going to help anything.
You want to eat a lot of leafy greens like kale, beet greens, spinach, and even bok choy. Plant-based foods contain none of the known causes of heart issues and they are very low in calories. The fiber in these plants can also be beneficial to heart health. As the fiber in the plants helps to clean your gastrointestinal tract, you're helping to enhance your overall metabolism. As your metabolism increases, you burn through food faster and are able to manage your weight more easily. As you keep your weight under control, your heart doesn't have to deal with fluctuations in your weight that cause it to work erratically.
Preparedness
As you get on in age, it's important to do what you can to prepare for any eventuality that could impact the health of your heart. One thing that older people should always consider having around is an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED. It may sound scary to think about, but having an AED around can be a very important step toward preserving heart health as you age. There are many AED Brands out there for you to look into, so try to find one you're comfortable with.
Be Smart
In the end, taking good care of your heart isn't rocket science. Most people more or less understand how to keep their heart in good shape. The difficult part is not in the education, but in the application of that education.
